Canton city income tax: the short version
- Rate: 2.5% for 2026.
- Who collects it: the City of Canton’s Income Tax Department. Your return is the City of Canton income tax return.
- Who files: Canton residents under 18 are exempt. If all your income is Social Security, pensions, interest and dividends, you don’t file a return; you send the city a one-time exemption certificate instead.
Work outside Canton? The credit usually covers it
Canton’s credit is a full credit for the tax you pay to the city where you work, counted up to 2.5% of that income.
An example: you earn $60,000 and work in Akron.
- Akron withholds its 2.5%: $1,500.
- Canton’s tax on the same pay is 2.5%: $1,500.
- Canton’s credit: $1,500.
- You owe Canton nothing more: the credit covers the whole Canton tax.
The same $60,000 of wages earned in other nearby cities, and what you’d still owe Canton after its credit:
| Where you work | Its city tax rate | Still owed to Canton |
|---|---|---|
| Akron | 2.5% | $0 |
| Barberton | 2.25% | $150 |
| Cuyahoga Falls | 2.0% | $300 |
| Wadsworth | 1.4% | $660 |
| Kent | 2.25% | $150 |
School district income tax
The Canton City School District has no school district income tax. Of the school districts based in Stark County, only Northwest Local (1.00%) charges one in 2026, so if your address is in a different school district, check it with the Ohio Department of Taxation’s school district lookup.
What’s different about Canton
Canton raised its rate from 2.0% to 2.5% on July 1, 2018, and collects the tax itself at 424 Market Avenue North. If you work somewhere with a city rate below 2.25%, or with no city tax, Canton expects you to file a Declaration of Estimated Tax and pay during the year. Residents under 18 are exempt.
What Ohio law sets for Canton
Ohio law sets these for Canton as for every other city. The tax covers wages, including your 401(k) contributions, plus self-employment and net rental income, but not Social Security or pensions. Returns are due April 15; a federal extension moves the filing date but not the payment date. If you expect to owe $200 or more, you make estimated payments during the year. Our guide explains these rules.
