Your city income tax depends on where you live

Every town in North Ohio handles local income tax differently. Townships have none, most cities use RITA, and a few collect their own. What you owe also depends on how much credit your home city gives for tax paid where you work. Here’s how the towns closest to our office work in 2026:

More of North Ohio, within about an hour

The same questions come up in the larger cities: which agency collects the tax, and how much credit you get for tax paid where you work. Here is how the main cities from Cleveland to Akron, Canton and Lorain County handle it in 2026:

Rates and credits are as published by each city, RITA or CCA. Some cities limit the credit to a percentage or a cap, so read your city’s page or ask us. Our guide to living in one city and working in another shows how the same $60,000 of wages costs more or less depending on the credit.

Three things the tables show:

  • Live in a township? You have no local income tax where you live. If you work in a city, that city’s tax is taken out of your pay, and there’s no hometown return to file.
  • Live in a city? The credit varies a lot. Akron, Elyria, Kent, Mentor, Solon and Middleburg Heights credit tax paid where you work up to their full rate. Strongsville, Brunswick and Medina credit only part of it, and Seville gives none. See how Medina’s works.
  • School district income tax: only a few North Ohio districts levy one, and none in Cuyahoga, Lake or Erie counties. Brunswick City and Medina City school districts have none. See the 2026 list for North Ohio.
