Ravenna city income tax: the short version
- Rate: 2.5% for 2026.
- Who collects it: RITA, the Regional Income Tax Agency. The city doesn’t collect it itself. Your Ravenna return is a RITA Form 37.
- Who files: Every Ravenna resident aged 18 or over files with RITA each year, whether or not tax is due: a Form 37 return or, if none of your income is taxable, a Declaration of Exemption. Residents under 18 are exempt from the tax and don’t need to file. Retirees with no taxable income file the exemption only once.
Work outside Ravenna? The credit usually covers it
Ravenna’s credit is a full credit for the tax you pay to the city where you work, counted up to 2.5% of that income.
An example: you earn $60,000 and work in Akron.
- Akron withholds its 2.5%: $1,500.
- Ravenna’s tax on the same pay is 2.5%: $1,500.
- Ravenna’s credit: $1,500.
- You owe Ravenna nothing more: the credit covers the whole Ravenna tax.
The same $60,000 of wages earned in other nearby cities, and what you’d still owe Ravenna after its credit:
| Where you work | Its city tax rate | Still owed to Ravenna |
|---|---|---|
| Akron | 2.5% | $0 |
| Kent | 2.25% | $150 |
| Stow | 2.0% | $300 |
| Hudson | 2.0% | $300 |
| Cuyahoga Falls | 2.0% | $300 |
School district income tax
The Ravenna City School District has no school district income tax. Of the school districts based in Portage County, only James A. Garfield Local (1.50%) charges one in 2026, so if your address is in a different school district, check it with the Ohio Department of Taxation’s school district lookup.
What’s different about Ravenna
Ravenna has used RITA since 2015. Its rate is 2.5%, with a full credit up to 2.5%, so residents who work in Akron, also at 2.5%, usually owe Ravenna nothing more.
Ravenna has about 11,100 residents (Census Bureau, 2025 estimate), and its workers average a 23.0-minute commute. Because Ravenna’s rate is 2.5%, a job in Kent, where the rate is 2.25%, still leaves $150 to pay Ravenna on $60,000 of wages.
What Ohio law sets for Ravenna
Ohio law sets these for Ravenna as for every other city. The tax covers wages, including your 401(k) contributions, plus self-employment and net rental income, but not Social Security or pensions. Returns are due April 15; a federal extension moves the filing date but not the payment date. If you expect to owe $200 or more, you make estimated payments during the year. Our guide explains these rules.
