Wooster city income tax: the short version

  • Rate: 1.5% for 2026.
  • Who collects it: the City of Wooster’s income tax office. Your return is the Wooster individual income tax return.
  • Who files: Every Wooster resident with taxable income files a city return. If none of your income is taxable to Wooster, for example because you are retired or were under 18 all year, you can file the city’s Declaration of Exemption instead, and it stays in effect until you have taxable income again.

Work outside Wooster? The credit usually covers it

Wooster’s credit is a full credit for the tax you pay to the city where you work, counted up to 1.5% of that income.

An example: you earn $60,000 and work in Akron.

  • Akron withholds its 2.5%: $1,500.
  • Wooster’s tax on the same pay is 1.5%: $900.
  • Wooster’s credit: $900.
  • You owe Wooster nothing more: the credit covers the whole Wooster tax.

The same $60,000 of wages earned in other nearby cities, and what you’d still owe Wooster after its credit:

School district income tax

The Wooster City School District has no school district income tax. Six school districts based in Wayne County charge one in 2026, including Triway Local (1.00%) and Northwestern Local (1.25%), so if your address is in a different school district, check it with the Ohio Department of Taxation’s school district lookup.

What’s different about Wooster

Wooster collects its own 1.5% tax. The credit for tax paid to another city is capped at 1.5%, so if you work in Akron or Cleveland at 2.5%, Wooster usually takes nothing more. New residents register with the city’s tax office before they can e-file.

What Ohio law sets for Wooster

Ohio law sets these for Wooster as for every other city. The tax covers wages, including your 401(k) contributions, plus self-employment and net rental income, but not Social Security or pensions. Returns are due April 15; a federal extension moves the filing date but not the payment date. If you expect to owe $200 or more, you make estimated payments during the year. Our guide explains these rules.
