Barberton city income tax: the short version

  • Rate: 2.25% for 2026.
  • Who collects it: RITA, the Regional Income Tax Agency. The city doesn’t collect it itself. Your Barberton return is a RITA Form 37.
  • Who files: Every Barberton resident aged 18 or over files with RITA each year, whether or not tax is due: a Form 37 return or, if none of your income is taxable, a Declaration of Exemption. Residents under 18 are exempt from the tax and don’t need to file. Retirees with no taxable income file the exemption only once.

Work outside Barberton? The credit usually covers it

Barberton’s credit is a full credit for the tax you pay to the city where you work, counted up to 2.25% of that income.

An example: you earn $60,000 and work in Akron.

  • Akron withholds its 2.5%: $1,500.
  • Barberton’s tax on the same pay is 2.25%: $1,350.
  • Barberton’s credit: $1,350.
  • You owe Barberton nothing more: the credit covers the whole Barberton tax.

The same $60,000 of wages earned in other nearby cities, and what you’d still owe Barberton after its credit:

School district income tax

The Barberton City School District has no school district income tax. Of the school districts based in Summit County, only the Norton City School District (0.50%) charges one in 2026, so if your address is in a different school district, check it with the Ohio Department of Taxation’s school district lookup.

What’s different about Barberton

Barberton has used RITA since 2021. Its rate is 2.25%, with a full credit up to 2.25%, so residents who work in Akron, where the rate is 2.5%, usually owe Barberton nothing more.

Barberton has about 24,700 residents (Census Bureau, 2025 estimate), and its workers average a 22.2-minute commute. A job in Akron is fully covered by the credit, but on $60,000 earned in Cuyahoga Falls or Hudson, both at 2.0%, a Barberton resident still owes Barberton $150.

What Ohio law sets for Barberton

Ohio law sets these for Barberton as for every other city. The tax covers wages, including your 401(k) contributions, plus self-employment and net rental income, but not Social Security or pensions. Returns are due April 15; a federal extension moves the filing date but not the payment date. If you expect to owe $200 or more, you make estimated payments during the year. Our guide explains these rules.
