Cuyahoga Falls city income tax: the short version
- Rate: 2.0% for 2026.
- Who collects it: RITA, the Regional Income Tax Agency. The city doesn’t collect it itself. Your Cuyahoga Falls return is a RITA Form 37.
- Who files: Every Cuyahoga Falls resident aged 18 or over files with RITA each year, whether or not tax is due: a Form 37 return or, if none of your income is taxable, a Declaration of Exemption. Residents under 18 are exempt from the tax and don’t need to file. Retirees with no taxable income file the exemption only once.
Work outside Cuyahoga Falls? The credit usually covers it
Cuyahoga Falls’s credit is a full credit for the tax you pay to the city where you work, counted up to 2.0% of that income.
An example: you earn $60,000 and work in Akron.
- Akron withholds its 2.5%: $1,500.
- Cuyahoga Falls’s tax on the same pay is 2.0%: $1,200.
- Cuyahoga Falls’s credit: $1,200.
- You owe Cuyahoga Falls nothing more: the credit covers the whole Cuyahoga Falls tax.
The same $60,000 of wages earned in other nearby cities, and what you’d still owe Cuyahoga Falls after its credit:
| Where you work | Its city tax rate | Still owed to Cuyahoga Falls |
|---|---|---|
| Akron | 2.5% | $0 |
| Stow | 2.0% | $0 |
| Kent | 2.25% | $0 |
| Hudson | 2.0% | $0 |
| Barberton | 2.25% | $0 |
School district income tax
The Cuyahoga Falls City School District has no school district income tax. Of the school districts based in Summit County, only the Norton City School District (0.50%) charges one in 2026, so if your address is in a different school district, check it with the Ohio Department of Taxation’s school district lookup.
What’s different about Cuyahoga Falls
Cuyahoga Falls has used RITA since 2019. Its rate is 2.0%, with a full credit up to 2.0%, so residents who work in Akron, at 2.5%, usually owe Cuyahoga Falls nothing more.
Cuyahoga Falls has about 51,000 residents (Census Bureau, 2025 estimate), and its workers average a 21.6-minute commute. Because the credit matches the city’s own 2.0% rate, a job in Akron or Kent leaves nothing more to pay; only a job in a city with a lower rate, or in a township with no city tax, leaves a balance for Cuyahoga Falls.
What Ohio law sets for Cuyahoga Falls
Ohio law sets these for Cuyahoga Falls as for every other city. The tax covers wages, including your 401(k) contributions, plus self-employment and net rental income, but not Social Security or pensions. Returns are due April 15; a federal extension moves the filing date but not the payment date. If you expect to owe $200 or more, you make estimated payments during the year. Our guide explains these rules.
