Stow city income tax: the short version

  • Rate: 2.0% for 2026.
  • Who collects it: the City of Stow’s Income Tax Division. Your return is the Stow annual income tax return.
  • Who files: Every Stow resident aged 18 or over files a Stow return, even if no tax is due. An exemption applies only if all of your income is non-taxable.

Work outside Stow? The credit usually covers it

Stow’s credit is a full credit for the tax you pay to the city where you work, counted up to 2.0% of that income.

An example: you earn $60,000 and work in Akron.

  • Akron withholds its 2.5%: $1,500.
  • Stow’s tax on the same pay is 2.0%: $1,200.
  • Stow’s credit: $1,200.
  • You owe Stow nothing more: the credit covers the whole Stow tax.

The same $60,000 of wages earned in other nearby cities, and what you’d still owe Stow after its credit:

School district income tax

The Stow-Munroe Falls City School District has no school district income tax. Of the school districts based in Summit County, only the Norton City School District (0.50%) charges one in 2026, so if your address is in a different school district, check it with the Ohio Department of Taxation’s school district lookup.

What’s different about Stow

Stow collects its own income tax through the city’s Income Tax Division instead of RITA. Every resident aged 18 or over files, even with no tax due, and Stow gives a 100% credit for tax paid to another city, up to 2%.

What Ohio law sets for Stow

Ohio law sets these for Stow as for every other city. The tax covers wages, including your 401(k) contributions, plus self-employment and net rental income, but not Social Security or pensions. Returns are due April 15; a federal extension moves the filing date but not the payment date. If you expect to owe $200 or more, you make estimated payments during the year. Our guide explains these rules.
